An association study of FOXO3 variant and longevity Genet. Mol. Biol.
Silva-Sena,Geralda Gillian; Camporez,Daniela; Santos,Lígia Ramos dos; Silva,Aline Sesana da; Sagrillo Pimassoni,Lúcia Helena; Tieppo,Alessandra; Pimentel Batitucci,Maria do Carmo; Morelato,Renato Lírio; Paula,Flavia de.
Abstract Human longevity is a polygenic and multifactorial trait. Pathways related to lifespan are complex and involve molecular, cellular, and environmental processes. In this analytical observational study, we evaluated the relationship between environment factors, oxidative stress status, DNA integrity level, and the association of FOXO3 (rs2802292), SOD2 (rs4880), APOE (rs429358 and rs7412), and SIRT1 (rs2273773) polymorphisms with longevity in oldest-old individuals from southeastern Brazil. We found an association between the FOXO3 GG genotype and gender. While lifestyle, anthropometric, and biochemical characteristics showed significant results, DNA damage and oxidative stress were not related to lifespan. We found that long-lived individuals with...

Can stochastic variations in recruitment induce long-term fluctuations in the carrying capacity? ArchiMer
Fromentin, Jean-marc.
Long-term fluctuations in fish abundance are generally attributed to low frequency processes, such as human exploitation and/or environmental and climatic changes. Based on recent studies and simple simulations, this manuscript shows how long-term fluctuations in the carrying capacity and/or spawning stock biomass of a long-live species, such as the Atlantic bluefin tuna, may simply arise from stochastic variations in the recruitment. The implications of such a feature are discussed and compared among different Atlantic tunas and tuna-like species.

Electrolyzed-reduced water increases resistance to oxidative stress, fertility, and lifespan via insulin/IGF-1-like signal in C. elegans Biol. Res.
Park,Seul-Ki; Park,Sang-Kyu.
Electrolyzed-reduced water (ERW) scavenges reactive oxygen species and is a powerful anti-oxidant. A positive correlation between oxidative stress and aging has been proved in many model organisms. In Caenorhabditis elegans, many long-lived mutants showed reduced fertility as a trade off against longevity phenotype. We aimed to study the effect of ERW on oxidative stress, fertility and lifespan of C. elegans. We also investigated the genetic pathway involved in the effect of ERW on resistance to oxidative stress and lifespan. We compared lifespan and fertility of worms in media prepared with distilled water and ERW. ERW significantly extended lifespan and increased the number of progeny produced. Then the effect of ERW on resistance to oxidative stress and...

Estimation of the lifespan of agricultural tractor using a diffusion model at the aggregate level Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Muñoz,Ricardo; Llanos,José.
The adoption of agricultural tractors by farms has resulted in different combinations, relationships and established ways of production of localities, regions and countries. The dynamics of the tractorization process are defined by the balance of the units that enter the fleet and those that are removed at the end of their useful life. This study uses a diffusion pattern and aggregated adoption of the agricultural tractor, the parameters of which were determined using a nonlinear estimation procedure and country-level data for Chile. Using the predictive power of the model, a longitudinal series of tractor fleets was estimated, and then the balance was calculated considering the units that were discharged. To more accurately determine the average lifespan...

Longevidade e oviposição de Ophyra albuquerquei (Diptera, Muscidae) em condições de laboratório Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Krüger,Rodrigo F.; Ribeiro,Paulo B.; Carvalho,Claudio J. B. de; Lambrecht,Francine M.; Nunes,Adrise M..
Aspects related to the longevity and oviposition of Ophyra albuquerquei Lopes, 1985 are studied. Males had a mean lifespan longer than females (40.24 vs. 33.15 days, respectively), while still possessing qualitative advantages during this period. Females O. albuquerquei were fed on powdered milk, fish flour, refined sugar and water, and provided fish flour and moistened sawdust for oviposition. The length of the oviposition period for females was 46.75 days, and most of the deposition of the eggs occurred in the first days of the colony. Females completed 50% of their egg deposition by Day 16, seven days before the large last mortality peak and about 12 days after the first oviposition in the colony. Females deposited an average of 184 eggs per individual....

Mechanisms involved in anti-aging effects of guarana (Paullinia cupana) in Caenorhabditis elegans BJMBR
Arantes,L.P.; Machado,M.L.; Zamberlan,D.C.; da Silveira,T.L.; da Silva,T.C.; da Cruz,I.B.M.; Ribeiro,E.E.; Aschner,M.; Soares,F.A.A..
Guarana (Paullinia cupana) is habitually ingested by people in the Amazon region and is a key ingredient in various energy drinks consumed worldwide. Extension in longevity and low prevalence of chronic age-related diseases have been associated to habitual intake of guarana. Anti-aging potential of guarana was also demonstrated in Caenorhabditis elegans; however, the mechanisms involved in its effects are not clear. Herein, we investigated the putative pathways that regulate the effects of guarana ethanolic extract (GEE) on lifespan using C. elegans. The major known longevity pathways were analyzed through mutant worms and RT-qPCR assay (DAF-2, DAF-16, SKN-1, SIR-2.1, HSF-1). The possible involvement of purinergic signaling was also investigated. This...

‘Sweet grape’ tomato post harvest packaging REA
Sandri,Delvio; Rinaldi,Maria M.; Ishizawa,Taís A.; Cunha,Ananda H. N.; Pacco,Honorato C.; Ferreira,Rafael B..
ABSTRACT This paper aims at evaluating the shelf life of mini tomatoes (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill.) cultivar ‘Sweet Grape’, grown in hydroponics, and stored under environmental and refrigerated conditions inside different packages. We adopted a completely randomized design, in which treatments were combinations of storage conditions: environment (e) and refrigerated (r) with packaging: polyvinyl chloride film (PVC); low-density polyethylene (LDPE); biofilm of tomato fruit of Solanum lycocarpum A.St.-Hil (lobeira) (TFB); cassava starch biofilm (CSB); carnauba wax (Copernicia prunifera) (CW), and without packaging - control (C). Physicochemical and sensory tests were carried out at the beginning (day zero), and at 8, 19, and 33 days of storage (DS). Fruit...
